Happy National Superhero Day! In this special edition of YA Shout Outs, we’re celebrating some of our favorite teen superheroes. Check out our staff picks below!

The Extraordinaries Series by TJ Klune

Heats Wave by TJ Klune“I assume by now you’ve heard us shout to the heavens about how much we love The Extraordinaries series from TJ Klune, but if you haven’t, now is the time to learn more! This series starts with The Extraordinaries, which follows fan fiction writer and superhero enthusiast Nick Bell as he sets out to make himself extraordinary and find a way to get superpowers. He ropes in his (reluctant) best friend Seth to help, and many shenanigans ensue. The series continues with Flash Fire, and finally, it all comes to an epic conclusion with Heat Wave, coming July 19th! I don’t want to spoil anything, but be prepared for an explosive finale that’ll knock your socks off.

This whole series is a delightful, hilarious, queer coming-of-age story about superheroes, found family, and accepting yourself for who you are. If you haven’t had a chance to dive in, now is the time to start!”

Shuri: A Black Panther Novel by Nic Stone

Shuris by Nic Stone“Martial arts isn’t all this princess is skilled in. Shuri, the genius younger sister of The Black Panther (T’Challa), adores science and technology just as much as her homeland, Wakanda. This trilogy of Shuri’s action-packed adventures is unmatched! From the mystery of depleting resources to the intrusion of Wakanda, Shuri is sure to find a way to victory. This teen heroine takes on the world to save those in need, especially after the cryptic rise of missing girls. Shuri’s epic quests and powerful mind give her supreme superheroine status!”

The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen

The Infinites Noise by Lauren Shippen“Based on her wildly popular and award-winning podcast The Bright SessionsThe Infinite Noise, the first standalone novel in creator Lauren Shippen’s YA series, follows Caleb—a 16-year-old football player who uncovers his super ability as a powerful empath through enlightening conversations with a mysterious therapist named Dr. Bright. While dealing with the highs and lows that come along with his new ability, Caleb finds himself falling into the emotional orbit of one of his classmates, Adam. Similar to her beloved podcast, Shippen’s YA debut centers on the relatable struggles of a queer teen superhero who’s trying to navigate mental health and first love while living with his newfound gift. The Infinite Noise gives readers a YA hero and a charming love story they’ll want to root for at every turn.”
