cemeteryboysCemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

“I’m so excited to get my hands on Aiden Thomas’ queer Latinx debut, Cemetery Boys! The novel follows a trans boy named Yadriel who is determined to prove his gender to his traditional Latinx family. Wanting to show that he is a real brujo, Yadriel performs the ritual himself, and sets off to find the ghost of his murdered cousin to set him free. But rather than summoning his cousin, the ghost turns out to be Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy. Julian is determined to figure out what happened to him before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help. But the more time he spends with Julian, the less Yadriel wants him to leave. This paranormal romance is a perfect addition to your TBR and right in time to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month!”

Blazewrath Games by debut author Amparo OrtizsBlazewrath Games by Amparo Ortiz

“Let me start by giving a shout-out to our beloved Tor Teen author Ann Dávila Cardinal for putting this new fantasy novel on my radar!

Blazewrath Games by debut author Amparo Ortiz feels like the answer to my constant plea for more Boricua fantasy. Set in a magical sports tournament where dragons and their riders battle it out, this new release features a kickass Latinx heroine named Lana who gets swept up into a world of action and intrigue when she is recruited to represent Team Puerto Rico in the thrilling worldwide competition she’s always longed to be a part of.

I feel like my heart isn’t ready for all of the joy this novel will surely give me and I’m bursting for my finished copy to arrive in the mail, but it’s pretty obvious I’m already on the #BlazewrathBandwagon.”

magical desert where nightmaressEach of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro

“I’m sure you’ve heard us talking a lot about Each of Us a Desert by Mark Oshiro, and that’s because it’s SO DARN GOOD. This beautiful coming-of-age fantasy novel takes place in a magical desert where nightmares can come to life, and it follows main character Xochitl as she searches for her place in the world. She’s the storyteller of her village, called a cuentista, and her job is to take the confessions of the people in her village and give them back to their god Solís. When she realizes things aren’t quite as they seem, she leaves her village on a quest to define her life on her own terms.

This book is tender and, at times, very scary! If you want to read a book that’s lyrically written and will break your heart into a million pieces only to pick them back up again, you’ll definitely want to pick this up.”

this is one of my favorite covers eversSia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything by Raquel Vasquez Gilliland

“Personally, I love covers in shades of cool blue and also desert views, so yes this is one of my favorite covers ever. Here is a story that explores themes surrounding immigration and folklore, and combines these broader concepts with science-fiction plot elements to create a genre-bending and introspective YA journey. I recommend this book to anyone who loves the wideness of star-strewn nights and stories about bonds between family.”

In honor of Latinx HeritagesFive Midnights by Ann Dávila Cardinal

“In honor of Latinx Heritage Month and the fact that spooky season is right around the corner, I’m so excited to talk about Five Midnights for our shoutouts this month! This YA horror set in Puerto Rico brings legends to life as Lupe Dávila, a teen from Vermont, travels to Puerto Rico to visit family. But she arrives just as her police-chief uncle is called to a horrid murder scene…and this is only the first of many. Lupe is spurred to join forces with Javier Utierre and the pair set out to find out who or what is causing a grisly string of murders throughout Puerto Rico. The setting, along with the supernatural and mythical elements, are defining aspects of Five Midnights that will leave you hungry for more. It’s intriguing to read a book based on folklore from the island. This is a perfect book to curl up with if you’re on the hunt for something that’ll give you all the chills and thrills as you explore the dark depths of Latinx myths.”
