Tor Teen Reader of the Month!!

Reader of the Month text, stack of books

“We lose ourselves in books. We find ourselves there too.” —Anonymous

October is here and it’s FINALLY starting to cool down where we are so we’re feeling the pumpkins, fall leaves and weathered pages by firelight aesthetic. And no one does the fall aesthetic quite like this month’s featured reader!

Last month we chatted with Kristen of My Friends Are Fiction, and this month we’re talking with someone who works with us here at Tor and Tor Teen, that’s right, it’s star bookstagrammer Ariana, of literary.faerie.

What got you into Bookstagram?
I admired bookstagram from afar for a while. I always thought that my photography skills would never be on par with everyone else’s, so I shied away from it. But a day came when I realized that it wasn’t about how well you take pictures and edit them. It’s all about the community—finding like-minded people who geek out about books just as much as you do. So before I could doubt myself, I created an account from scratch and worked my way from there. I learned tips and tricks about photography as I went along (i.e. proper lighting, using props to my advantage, what filter/s fit the aesthetic I was trying to create and maintain). But the most rewarding part is the friends I’ve made from this platform. I’m so grateful that this little cozy corner of the internet brought us together. I’ve had my bookstagram since April 23rd, 2017. And joining this community was easily one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!

What’s your favorite Tor Book of all time?

When I found out I’d be working at Tor, I almost cried because I knew Tor published the A Darker Shade of Magic series by V.E. Schwab, and I have a deep love of this series. Lila Bard is who I aspire to be. Kell feels like home. Rhy is my precious baby that needs a hug. So this series is my favorite by Tor! But as I go, I’m really looking forward to reading more and more by Tor (peep my rhyme game). I love books more than anything and I couldn’t be happier to be part of the Tor family!

Describe your perfect reading spot.

I have this wonderful, cozy chair in my room next to my bookshelf. It’s a peacock chair that my mom got back in the 70s, which she put in my room when I was born and it’s been here ever since. I have this chair loaded with comfy pillows and a plant hanger hanging right above it that houses my little plant pal, Olaf. Not to mention it’s proximity to my shelf is super convenient! Sitting here on a Saturday night with a candle burning nearby, a hot chocolate with mini marshmallows on my bedside table, a blanket on my lap, and a good book in hand is the most perfect and peaceful reading spot I could ever dream of.

What is your favorite bookstagram prop?

BABY PUMPKINS! And autumn leaves! And cozy blankets! And coffee/tea/hot chocolate! And adorable mugs! Okay, so perhaps my proper answer would be: all things fall-related. I tend to use warm, beige and taupe tones in my feed—which is best executed when fall is here. Plus, it’s the time my soul comes alive. So give me all the autumn props and I’m a happy bean!
