YA Bromances Feature

It’s Best Friends Week! Yesterday we talked about some of our favorite female friendships in YA fantasy, and today we’re talking our favorite YA bromances. While we love the romance in YA, for us it’s often the friendships that keep us turning the pages. So we’ve picked 5 YA bromantic friendships that shine from some of our favorite YA books.

Theo and Chip from Dive Smack by Demetra Brodsky

Sometimes friendships Sometimes friendships are ultimately about the family we choose. For Theo, Chip grounds and steadies him, and, of course, they’ve been friends so long that they’ve got a lot of great snarky banter. They’re on the diving team together, and following the traumatic fire that kills Theo’s mother, he ends up half living with Chip’s and his family. If you
like the kind of friendship where two friends balance each other AND have a lot of crazy fun, this is the bromance for you.

Kaz Brekker and Jesper Fahey from Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo In this Ocean’s 11-style, fantasy YA caper, none of the characters are your average heroes. For one thing, they’re all criminals. Shady, bromantic, power-couple Kaz and Jesper’s relationship was formed on the streets. Kaz is wily, brilliant and dangerous. Jesper is a lighter presence, bringing levity to their partnership while at the same time being his own kind of loyal, pistol-wielding dangerous. They’re all banter and bravado, and even though there are some pretty serious bumps in the road, their friendship is one of the highlights of Leigh Bardugo’s amazing duology.

Jake and Bunker from Prettyboy Must Die by Kimberly Reid

Peter Smith AKA Peter Smith AKA Jake Morrow AKA CIA prodigy on a mission wasn’t planning on making friends at school. But he slides into an easy, supportive friendship with Bunker, a former shut-in built like a brick house. When Jake’s cover is blown and his bestie finds out he’s not actually Peter, he’s still all in and helps Jake take back the school from international criminals. Everyone needs a friend like that.

James and Sirius from the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

Now don Now don’t get us wrong, Harry and Ron are tops. But James and Sirius’ tragic bromance doesn’t get as much page-time and that left us longing for more. Marauders prequel anyone?

From what we know about this crazy duo, they were not only such dear friends that Sirius was the automatic godfather to James’ child, but were also a glorious pranking duo only matched by actual brother’s Fred and George Weasley. Our collective heart’s broke when Sirius called Harry “James” in the film version.

Richard Campbell Gansey III and Ronan Lynch from The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

Of course all of the bromances Of course all of the bromances between the Aglionby boys are incredible, but we’re especially partial to Gansey and Ronan’s friendship. Even though their personalities are dramatically different – Gansey the charismatic, driven, leader and Ronan the troubled, often confrontational troublemaker – their loyalty to each other runs deep. Both of them repeatedly risk life and limb for their friend as they search for the legendary sleeping king, Glendower.
