If you haven’t noticed, it’s pretty rare to find some solid female friendships in literature. But have no fear–we’re continuing our celebration of Best Friends Week with five awesome fantasy novels (our expertise!) that feature strong female friendships. #GirlPower

In Sightwitch, Ryber and Tanzi are good friends who are parted when Tanzi is summoned into the mountain home of the sleeping goddess Sirmaya and never returns. The girls’ bond is palpable through flashbacks and journal entries from both girls’ points of view, and their scribbled notes to each other in the margins of the pages. The loss of Tanzi doesn’t feel real at first, and becomes more horrifying as we slowly begin to understand the depth of their friendship. A unique way to reveal such a strong companionship! The first book in the Witchlands series, Truthwitch, also contains an epic female friendship. Check it out!

Camellia still hasn’t embraced her witchdom. Her acquaintance (and complete opposite) Poppy Jones has. Forced to come together when their mothers are in danger, the two girls form an unexpected alliance. We like this one because it’s about two girls who reconcile their differences for a common mission–and then find friendship along the way.

One of the most supportive female friendships we’ve seen in fantasy, Nina and Inej are a great example of a duo that empowers each other. In Six of Crows, there are six social outcasts (Nina and Inej included) who band together to perform a heist that could release magical havoc on the world. Nina, the magical heartrender, and Inej, the reluctant assassin, make for one pair of badass besties.

Ok, yeah, they’re sisters–but that doesn’t mean they can’t also be best friends! Addie is willing to conquer her worst fears (i.e. spiders, dragons, and specters) and risk her life to find a cure for her ill sister, Meryl, who has always been the more courageous one. Princess Addie is fueled by the strongest female bond of all: the bond of sisterhood!

Lissa Dragomir is a strange kind of vampire–she can harness the world’s magic. She’s also mortal. This makes Lissa a huge target to be exploited by the immortal Strigoi. Luckily, Lissa has her best friend to protect her. Rose and Lissa are constantly in danger, which just strengthens their bond. Their friendship is a great example of unfaltering loyalty.
